This is my blog for Unit 2 of MAGCD at Central Saint Martins.

Brief
While the intention of Unit 1 is to expose you to a diverse range of perspectives, Unit 2 provides a framework for challenging and strengthening your particular stance as a graphic communication designer. Individual reflection and authorship are a key part of this process. However, in situating your practice, it is equally important that you critically interrogate the wider frames of reference to which your work is related, and that you test and extend your thinking through a continuous engagement in practical experimentation and reflection.

Iterate
In parallel with your work within Position (and Publish), this brief carries forward the process-based work that you initiated within the Elaborate brief in Unit 1. This brief seeks to capitalize on insights and opportunities—even where unanticipated or unplanned—that arise through focused, sustained creative practice.
Position
In this brief, you will develop, articulate and contextualise an in-depth position that relates graphic communication design to your broader practice. The outcome of this process is a research paper. Creative approaches to the practice of writing are encouraged but you are expected to demonstrate rigour and observe academic conventions of referencing. Your paper forms the basis of your contribution to a cohort-wide publication (prepared as part of the Publish brief).
Publish
The goal of this brief is to explore the close relationship of publishing to the idea of publicness. Your cohort will plan a symposium wherein each student will present their ongoing work. You will also contribute to the planning, design and production of an associated publication. The symposium and publication are intended to articulate and share the ways that your cohort and the broader course community are critically interrogating the present landscape of graphic communication design.
Unit 2 is divided into three thematic and cumulative briefs that together build upon your experiences in Unit 1. You can explore each one of them through the menu on the left.
